“Halka” by Stanisław Moniuszko, Polish national composer. When Intendant Häberli asked me if I wanted to do the piece, I was standing in front of the white and red border in Görlitz. What a coincidence! Poland is my European longing country, I know the country, learn the language and know about the history. The production of “Halka” reflected all of this, and as a relevant bridge to Halka, an exhibition in the foyer of the theatre about Polish forced labourers during the Nazi era, “Preserving Memory,” was the title. It came from Warsaw, I had acquired the money for it. A moving story with many touching episodes.
