The opera is a discovery, musically and in content. One thinks one is hearing the young Verdi with the ears of Donizetti, stirring vigorously in the pot of notes and even ending up with a pinch of Mendelssohn with a little Wagner – in short: the musical language of Foroni is very unique, dramatic and special. Likewise the plot: Christina becomes queen, a headstrong woman on the Swedish throne, she is Catholic, the country Protestant, she is interested in women and less in the procreation of a successor, she loves escapades and provocations. It’s clear that she flees, finds lodgings with the pope and abdicates – with a lot of paraphernalia in her luggage. With Stefan Rieckhoff the most beautiful production, thank you for that!
